The Baby Animal 60dB single channel mic pre kit is a classic old school transformer single opamp stage mic pre only needing a single 48v power rail to run on. It is by far our most popular kit having due to its ease to build and great range of useful warm tones. The PCB can take several input transformer types as well as several normal dual DIP8 opamps or discrete 1.1" opamps with standard 990 / 2520 pinout. A DI kit can be added in seconds with no wirng except one flat ribbon cable. This kit is even easier to build as no power supply has to be built if using our prebuilt external 48v SMPS which can run up to 4 Baby Animals with DI's and runs on any mains voltage in the world.

Fantastic kit that gives DIY'ers the means to build their own flagship preamp!

This kit is something special. It provides a platform with so many options to fit any DIY'ers budget. You can start out with the top-of-the-line configuration direct from JLM or piecemeal together a fun, unique sounding preamp using quirky vintage or junk box parts. The choice is yours! I've built 5 Baby Animals, with different combinations of transformers and discrete opamps. Now I have a range of colors for choosing a sonic palette, and I get compliments on the robustness of my recordings. Hearing all the tone the moment we hit playback during a tracking session brings me great joy. I don't have to spend time fiddling with plugins trying to make sterile sounding raw tracks more exciting for the performers just to get them excited to do another take. Analog advantage! Thanks JLM! JLM Baby Animal

I just built a single baby animal using the OEP input tranny and JLM99V and FET DI. The guitar sound I've achieved through this unit is HUGE. Big, full, really 'meaty' sound. The kit PCB is fantastic also, makes building it extremely simple. Joe was a great help too, really goes out of his way to help, will definitely be building another kit soon.
