TG500 mic pre is a 2 FET 6 transistor Class A design giving 75dB of gain. It is based on early NEVE, BBC, EMI gear simple transistor gain stages fully redesigned to includes heaps of extra useful features and to run on API+/-16v rails (run fully symmetrically so output head room is not lost and no DC to DC inverters are needed). Uses modern easy to get transistors and our custom audio transformers. It is NOT a EMI TG clone but to compare the tone to a EMI it is fatter, smoother sounding and has more clarity in the low mids than a Neve 1073. It is the go to pre for Electric Guitars. And if you want old school tone all over your recording that will gel it together without turning everything to mud this is the one.

Max Output = +24.5dbu @ 1khz into 600ohm Load & +26dBu @ 1khz into 10k load

Sound Samples I am not a big fan of samples because if you didn't hear the original instruments sound in the studio with your own ears then really you don't have a true point of reference to gauge the samples against. These samples are more to show the difference between the Dual99v500 and TG500.

All instruments recorded by Matt Redlich with no EQ or compression. Pres had Impedance left centred in the Z detent and no HPF. Pres were used in there cleanest mode with output trim not pulled to allow for gain overdrive.

JLM TG500 dethrones all my other pres!

Awesome pre, hands down the best in my meager arsenal but it's great to have a new higher standard to measure against. The features I love about it are the 80Hz high pass filter switch (every pre should have this IMO), the 1/4" input on the front, the push/pull output knob for detailed -5dB sweep or infinite sweep and the variable impedance knob. The variable impedance is really cool to experiment with ... turn it counter clockwise to roll off transients and get a more smeared sound or filtered result or roll it clockwise to dial in more detail, precision and zoom in on your source. How cool is that?!? Only have one mic and recording melody and harmony vocals? Turn up the impedance for the melody, lean into the mic and get your takes. Turn down the impedance, lean back from the mic and boom harmonies are sitting where they should be, less mixing work. Used the TG500 for this cover song. I have clean preamps, and I have Neve sounding preamps and API sounding preamps. And then I have the TG500! It is fabulous and different! (Sat Jul 05 2025, 02:35 am )

I got my TG for more than a year now and i slowly started to notice that electric guitar cab tracks recorded with the TG500 were most times without any processing whatsoever in the mix when the mix was done. So either i am a genius now (i wouldn't bet on it) or the TG just does what it does very good... and i got more than 30 channels of good preamps, John Hardy, Amek, Telefunken, JLM dual 99 to compare. The tracks just sit in the mix and smile at you. (Sun Dec 01 2024, 21:49 pm )

Picked up two of these bad boys to go with my Eleven rack and can't wait to get some more! These absolutely rule on guitars. Used them on a recent session and was the preamp of choice on guitar bass and even vocals (over API/Neve/Avalon) (Mon May 06 2019, 11:45 am )
